US Reaches Multiple Trade Agreements In Asia
The U.S. has made progress on tariffs and even reached agreements with multiple countries in Asia. We’ll take a look at the agreements and discuss the new rate applied to imports from each nation.
US – Indonesia Agreement
While not finalized, the U.S. and Indonesia have agreed to the framework of a trade agreement.
As part of the new agreement, Indonesia will remove 99% of its tariffs on U.S. goods and scrap all non-tariff barriers on U.S. firms.
In return, the U.S. will apply a 19% percent tariff on Indonesian imports. This is lower than the 32% tariff that was proposed in April.
Both countries are conducting their final talks that will hopefully result in a signature from each nation’s leader.
US – Japan Agreement
The U.S. and Japan reached a trade deal on July 23rd, 2025.
Japans responsibilities as stipulated in the agreement include:
- Committing a $550 billion package of U.S. bound investment and loans
- Purchasing 100 Boeing planes
- Increasing defense spending with U.S. firms from $14 billion to $17 billion annually
For the U.S.’s part, it will lower tariffs on Japanese auto imports to 15%, which is lower than the original 25% rate originally proposed.
Tariffs imposed on other Japanese goods will be lowered from 25% to 15% as well.
US – Philippines
The U.S. also reached a trade with the Philippines on July 23rd, 2025. Imports from the Philippines will be charged a 19% tariff rate, which is slightly higher than the 17% rate originally charged in April, but lower than the 20% announced earlier in July.
The Philippines will increase their imports from the U.S. and maintain a 0% tariff on U.S. imports.
