October Arrives with New Tariffs

A variety of tariffs from the Trump administration were announced for October 2025. We’ll discuss the details and the commodities that are affected.

What Tariffs Will Take Effect In October?

A 25% tariff on heavy trucks was slated to start on October 1st. Although they’ve entered into effect, the government has yet to release official documentation on the new rate.

The US will also implement more tariffs on furniture and wood imports on October 14th. We’ve listed the affected products and their respective rates.

  • Softwood Timber – 10%
  • Lumber – 10%
  • Upholstered Wooden Products – 25%
  • Couches – 25%
  • Sofas – 25%
  • Chairs – 25%

Kitchen cabinets, vanities, and parts used to manufacture these products will be subject to a 25% tariff.

The US has reached tariff agreements with the UK, Japan, and European Union. Tariff rates for wood and furniture imports will be less if they originate from one of these trading partners.

For example, wood and furniture imports from the UK will be subject to a 10% rate. The same products will be subject to a 15% rate if they’re from Japan or the EU.

What About the 100% Tariff On Pharmaceuticals?

On September 25th, President Trump announced a 100% tariff on branded or patented pharmaceutical products on October 1st. When October 1st came, the Trump administration delayed the action.

This is because the administration is attempting to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies in the US. Their plan is to reach a deal similar to the one they achieved with Pfizer
