New Reports Show Uptick In Trucking Activity
Reports from the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) and Cass Information Systems show an uptick in trucking activity. This comes after months of stagnation in the industry. We’ll take a look at the data and its implications for the future.
What Does the BTS Report Say?
The BTS reported that its overall freight transportation services index (TSI) dipped between July and August. However, trucking activity still managed to increase during the same time.
The truck tonnage index was at 114.2 in July, and it rose to 115 in August. This suggests there was an increase for truckload freight transportation during this time.
Cass Information Systems has released data that shows a decrease in less-than truckload (LTL) shipments. While there was a dip in LTL, there was an increase in full truckload (FTL) freight movements.
What Does This Mean for the Trucking Industry?
While the increase in trucking activity and FTL shipments is a good sign, it’s not an indication these trends will continue into the future.
The increase in trucking activity simply shows that demand for other transportation services fell. It doesn’t mean exponential growth in truckload freight shipping.
As for the decline in LTL and rise in FTL, this was likely due to shippers consolidating their loads to take advantage of lower rates.
