50% Tariff on Steel and Aluminum Expands to More Products

The tariff on steel and aluminum imports has been set at 50% since June 3rd. That said, it only applied to a limited number of derivative commodities. That is no longer the case. Earlier this week, the list of products subject to the tariff was expanded. We’ll discuss the details and explain how U.S. importers will be affected.

How Many Products Are Affected?

On August 18th, 2025, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced that an additional 407 product categories would be subject to the 50% steel and aluminum tariff.

While giving a comprehensive list of every item would take up too much space, I’ve provided some notable goods that are now affected:

These include:

  • Wind turbines
  • Cranes
  • Chemicals
  • Plastics
  • Refrigerators
  • Freezers
  • Dryers
  • Furniture components

The expansion doesn’t allow a transit exemption for importers. This means any imported goods that are already in transit to the U.S. or withdrawn from bonded storage will be subject to the 50% tariff.

How Will Importers Be Affected?

U.S. businesses that import steel or aluminum products affected by the tariff expansion will now have an additional expense to pay.

Importers also have to look through all 407 product categories to determine if the steel and aluminum tariff will apply to their goods. This is a time-consuming process where the simplest of errors are easy to make.

Unfortunately for importers, there are currently no exemptions to the tariff expansion of steel and aluminum.
